Software Distribution Service 3.0 Strikes Again
I wrote in June about my DAW developing a chronic BSOD problem out of nowhere, and figuring out the problem was caused by Microsoft’s “Software Distribution Service 3.0.” Well, last week the BSOD-reboot started happening again. The first few times, I made like an ostrich and pretended it didn’t happen. Tonight, however, it happened while I was mixing and I lost an hour’s work EQing guitar tracks and de-essing vocals. You can bet that I was angry.
I started looking through my System Restore points, and lo and behold: Software Distribution Service 3.0 was installed again on July 27. (Again, without my knowledge or permission). I restored to an earlier point.
For the time being, I have disabled all Automatic Updates. Once I get my mixing project finished, I’ll reevaluate what can be done.

For anyone else who may stumble across this while looking for answers relating to blue screens appearing after an update. Software Distribution Service 3.0 is just the name of the program that installs Windows updates. It may install several (up to 30 or more) at one time. If you start getting blue screens after an update make a note of any file name referenced in the stop error and do a wildcard search for the file name in the Windows folder (I.E. search using the file name with a .* at the end instead of the real extension). If you find the file in any of the $NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$ folders then you will have the name of the updates that may be causing your blue screens (the KBxxxxxx part) and you can uninstall them or use system restore to go back to the date before they were installed. Also be sure to run MalwareBytes to make sure you do not have a rootkit that is causing the updates to fail and create the blue screens.
seems like this is cousing my bsods also! was getting irql_not_less_or_equal bsod and was driving me crazy! even changed RAM and reinstalled windows and everythng was fine until first automatic update! i did system restore and saw that only software distribution service 3.0 is newly instaled! after restoring everythng is working fine (i think)
