How To Open EZDrummer in Sonar

After you install EZDrummer, you have to tell Sonar where to find it before you can use EZDrummer. This tutorial explains how to set up EZDrummer as a VST Plugin in Sonar.

Before you follow these steps, make sure you have installed EZDrummer by inserting the CD and following the prompts. If you want, you can also apply any updates you have downloaded. Hopefully, you have purchased a legal copy of EZDrummer. It really is a fantastic piece of software at a great price. I don’t get any money or kickbacks to say that – I just believe in paying for things that people worked for, whether it is software or music. Now, on to the tutorial…

First, open the Options > Global menu in Sonar.

Sonar and EZDrummer 1
Open the Global Configuration

Navigate to the VST Plug-ins Tab.

Sonar and EZDrummer 2
Choose the VST Plug-ins Tab

Click the “Add” button to add a VST Scan Folder. The default installation folder for the EZDrummer plugin is C:\Program Files\VstPlugins. Select that folder in the dialog box and click OK. (If for some reason, EZDrummer is not installed in the default location, you can search your hard drive for ezdrummer.dll).

Sonar and EZDrummer 3
Find the folder where EZDrummer is installed

You should now see a new addition in the VST Scan Folder(s) box – the location you just selected.

Sonar and EZDrummer 4
The VST Scan Folder(s) box now shows the location you selected.

Click OK. Now you must exit Sonar and start it again. When you restart it, you should be able to add EZDrummer to your projects from the Insert > Soft Synths menu.

Open EZDrummer in Sonar with the Insert > Soft Synths Menu – click to enlarge

After EZ Drummer loads its samples, you should be ready to go. Next, you might want to consider Making an EZDrummer Template for Sonar.

  1. [...] First, create a new, empty project. Name it “EZ Drummer Template” or something like that. If there are any audio or MIDI tracks in the project, delete them. Next, insert EZ Drummer into your project as a soft synth. (If you can’t find EZDrummer in your Soft Synths, see the tutorial on How to open EZDrummer in Sonar). [...]

No, EZ Drummer is not a standalone program – you need a host program to use it. Do you have Sonar?

    Hi

I have tried 10 times to make EZDrummer appear in Sonar 5 and have come to the conclusion it simply does not work in S5…I have loaded many other virtuals/synths/etc (NI Guitar Rig, B-4). The VST config application shows it being there but it is not available in soft synth..

    Thanks
    Mark

sounds like a couple of you need to learn how to use softsynths in sonar. I suggest looking up that section of the sonar manual.

Also if I remember correctly I think it’s only the more recent versions of sonar that natively support vst – the older ones I think only supported dxi? I could be wrong.

Whenever I install ez drummer, it does not go into the default installation folder “C:\Program Files\VstPlugins” do i have to create it, or is ez drummer so supposed to? This is increadibly stressful, I know this is an old blog, but there are some answers from late 2010, so if anyone, or the blog write could help, please, reply here (i visit daily) or email me at djentilluminati@london.com
